Storing cosmetics well: the open-jar symbol, light, heat and travel sizes

The products we sell are built on plant oils, extracts and essential oils in a water base. Like anything made from plants, they keep best under simple conditions: cool, dark, closed. This article explains the storage symbols on the labels and the handful of habits that keep a product as good on the last day as on the first.

The open-jar symbol

On the back of most European cosmetics is a small drawing of an open jar with a number and the letter M, for example 12M. This is the period after opening: the number of months the manufacturer states the product can be used after it is first opened. Our sprays and lotions carry 12M. Write the date you opened a product on the base with a marker, or keep it in your phone, and finish the product within that period. An unopened product keeps until the expiry date if there is one on the packaging; we ship only from lots inside their dates.

Light

Sunlight and strong daylight change plant oils and fade colours. Keep products out of direct sun: a drawer or cupboard is better than a windowsill. The Exyol SC serum comes in a dropper bottle and its label asks for a cool place away from light; close the cap after every use.

Heat

Do not leave cosmetics in a hot car, on a radiator or by a stove. Room temperature is right. Lavyl Auricum contains alcohol and essential oils and is flammable: keep it away from heat, flame and sparks, and do not spray near a lit candle. The alcohol-free products are not flammable but still prefer to be cool. A refrigerator is not necessary and can make a lotion thicker; if you like a cold spray in summer, chilling the bottle for a short while before use is fine.

Water and hands

Keep the cap on and the pump clean. With the body butter, use clean, dry hands and close the tube. With a spray, wipe the nozzle occasionally with a dry cloth. Do not decant products into other containers; the original packaging is chosen for the formula, and you lose the label, the batch number and the open-jar symbol.

Travel

The 50 ml sizes of Lavyl Auricum, Auricum Sensitive, Genie Spirit, Lymph and Solvyl CC exist for travel and the gym: they are within the usual 100 ml cabin limit, they take up little space and they let you keep the full bottle at home, cool and dark. Pack sprays upright in a sealed bag in case of pressure changes on a flight. When you come home, the small bottle goes back in the drawer with the others.

When something looks wrong

If a product changes colour or scent noticeably, separates and does not mix on shaking, or is past its period after opening, stop using it. Products that ask to be shaken (Astria and Genie Spirit say so on the label) will look slightly uneven before shaking, which is normal. For anything you are unsure about, email us with the batch number printed on the packaging and we will help.
