Fragrance components: linalool, limonene and the allergen line on EU labels

Look at the ingredient list of Lavyl Genie Spirit, Lavyl Astria or Solvyl Clean and you will find, near the end, some or all of these: Linalool, Limonene, Citral, Geraniol, Citronellol, Farnesol. People sometimes read them as chemicals added to the product. They are the opposite: they are natural components of the essential oils that give the products their scent.

Where they come from

Lavender oil is largely made of linalool and linalyl acetate. Sweet orange, lemon and citron peel oils are mostly limonene. Lemongrass, may chang (Litsea cubeba) and lemon balm carry citral. Geraniol and citronellol occur in rose, geranium and citronella oils, and in smaller amounts in lavender. Farnesol occurs in ylang-ylang and lemon balm. Whenever a formula uses these essential oils, these components come with them.

Why they are listed separately

European cosmetics law names a set of fragrance components that must be declared on the label by name when they exceed a small threshold (0.001 percent in leave-on products, 0.01 percent in rinse-off products). The rule exists so that people who know they are sensitive to a particular component can find it on the label quickly, instead of having to know which essential oils contain it. The products we sell are made in the European Union and carry these declarations on their labels, and our product pages reproduce them.

What the list tells you, and what it does not. A component being listed means it is present above the threshold; it does not tell you the exact amount, and it does not mean the product is more or less likely to suit you than a product without the declaration. Most people use products containing these components every day without noticing anything. If you know you react to one of them, the declaration is there for you; if you do not, the sensible step is the same as for any new product: patch test first.

Alcohol-free is not fragrance-free

Lavyl Auricum Sensitive contains no alcohol, and that is the difference from Lavyl Auricum; it still contains the lavender, orange and rosemary oils, and therefore the same fragrance components. Fragrance-free would mean no essential oils at all, and none of the products in our range is made that way.

How we present this

Our Ingredients page groups these six under Fragrance components, with a plain description of where they come from. Each product page carries its full label list. If you would like to check a particular product before buying, that is the place to look, and support@lavylitesusa.com is happy to confirm what a label says.
