Winter in most of the United States means the same thing indoors: heating on, humidity down, and skin that feels tighter by the afternoon than it did in September. You do not need a different set of products for that. You need the ones you have, used with a slightly different rhythm. Here is a routine built on the Lavyl series that takes a few minutes a day.
Wash gently
Long hot showers feel good in January and leave skin feeling tight afterwards. Keep the water warm rather than hot, keep the shower short, and use a wash that rinses clean without stripping: Lavyl Clean is a daily shower gel with lavender, orange and rosemary extracts, made to lather and rinse without leaving skin feeling tight. Lather on wet skin, rinse, and pat dry with a towel rather than rubbing. For hair, Lavyl Hair is suitable for everyday use; in winter every second day is often enough, and the scalp will tell you.
Moisturise while skin is still slightly damp
This is the single change that makes the most difference. Apply Lavyl Body within a few minutes of drying off, while the skin still has a little water on it; the lotion spreads more easily and feels more comfortable. Work it in with the palms over the arms, legs and torso, and give it a moment before dressing. In deep winter use it morning and evening; in a mild spell, once a day is plenty.
Give more to the places that need it. Hands, elbows, knees and heels feel the season first. Keep Lavyl Allin Tube where you will use it: by the kitchen sink for hands after washing, by the bed for feet at night. Warm a small amount between the palms and massage it in. On hands, apply it after the last wash of the evening so it has the night to sink in. It is a rich butter, so a pea-sized amount for both hands is enough.
Small habits that help
Keep a humidifier in the bedroom if the air is very dry. Wear gloves outdoors; cold wind dries the backs of the hands faster than anything else. Drink water through the day. Do not skip the moisturiser on days you do not shower; the skin does not know the difference. And keep the products at room temperature away from the radiator: heat is not good for plant oils.
What to leave out
Winter is not the time to introduce several new products at once. If you want to add one, patch test it first and add it alone for a week. Sprays such as Lavyl Auricum still have their place in winter, especially for the morning, but they are lighter than a lotion; on a very dry day use the lotion as well rather than instead.
As always, these are cosmetics for everyday care, used as directed on the label. Directions for each product are on its page, and our How to use and safety page covers patch testing, cautions and storage.
